How people define single sign-on (SSO) varies. It can mean using the same user credentials for different applications, but managed by a directory server (Directory Server Authentication). Some call this Basic SSO. SSO is also used to mean authentication where one sign-on generates a token or signed assertion that aware applications use to govern access.
