New-age technologies like 5G, foldable displays, and AI-powered processors are adding the necessary spice to the smartphone market in 2020. Giants like Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Nokia, and LG are expected to launch a plethora of phones in 2020 with mind-boggling features to entice the audience. Discover below some interesting smartphone trends to look out for in 2020, as well as the best upcoming devices.

Samsung Galaxy S11

According to the leaked patent images, Samsung Galaxy S11 might come with a fully bezel-less screen and an expandable display. It’s common practice in the industry for companies to file a patent just as a protective measure, so do not take this information for granted. Rumor has it that Samsung will upgrade the camera setup by fitting the 48-megapixel sensor unveiled in May. The new camera sensor is capable of capturing 64-megapixel images at a maximum resolution of 0.8 μm. The sensor is also capable of taking HDR and 480FPS videos at 1080p.

Nokia 10

The next Nokia flagship is expected to be a real upgrade, especially in the camera department. The device will feature a combination of dual 48MP (wide-angle and telephoto) camera sensors on its rear with 4-axis Optical Image Stabilization. The phone will also come with 5G technology and will be water and dust resistant. Rumors suggest that the device will feature an in-display fingerprint scanner, 5G compatibility, and a 6.5-inch display.

OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro

The OnePlus 8 series will pack many exclusive features, including 5G compatibility, an HDR display, and a depth-sensing 3D Time-of-Flight sensor. Leaked images show a hole-punch display and stunning curved screen with minimal bezels. Rumors also suggest that the device will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 and will come with a 120Hz display and improved AR capabilities. One feature OnePlus devices are missing compared to other flagships is wireless charging. Will 2020 be the year OnePlus fans will finally get this feature? Rumors say yes.

Apple iPhone X Fold

There are strong rumors that Apple plans to take the market by storm with its first foldable phone. Called iPhone X Fold, the device could be released in 2020, featuring an 8.3 inches display when completely unfolded.

It is expected that Apple will use its top-notch hardware and strong security to make it look beautiful from inside and outside. Specialists expect a really high price for the device, considering Samsung’s foldable device comes with a $2,000 price tag.

Microsoft Foldable Smartphone

After Microsoft tried and failed to capture developer and consumer attention with Windows Phone, the tech giant is now looking to try its hands again in the smartphone world. According to some strong rumors, Microsoft will launch in 2020 its Android-powered foldable device, called Surface Duo. The device unveiled by Microsoft in October 2019 features two 14.2 centimeter displays that can be unfolded to create a small tablet device. Moreover, both screens can run different apps simultaneously, massively increasing productivity.

Huawei P40 PRO

The upcoming Huawei smartphone may feature a 2K OLED display with a resolution of 1440 x 3120 pixels, most likely powered by the HiSilicon Kirin 990 5G chipset, coupled with a Mali-G76 GPU. In the camera department, Huawei P40 PRO is rumored to have a triple 48MP + 8MP + 16MP rear camera and a 40MP front-facing camera for selfies. The device should come with a 4500 mAh battery and with 45W fast charging support. Rumors say it will run Android 10.

Google Pixel 5

Google Pixel 5 and 5 XL will come with a Quad HD+ OLED display panel with higher brightness, better battery life and a camera setup with 3 sensors, including an ultrawide lens.  Most certainly, the device will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor and will feature 5G capability.

Without a doubt, 2020 will be a huge year for the mobile arena, with all eyes on 5G, foldable and dual-display devices. According to IDC, smartphone sales are predicted to increase in 2020 as a result of 5G, with Android seeing increased sales but iOS and Apple’s iPhone still facing challenges. “The anticipation of 5G, beginning with smartphones, has been building for quite some time, but the challenges within the smartphone market over the past three years have magnified that anticipation,” said Ryan Reith, program vice president with IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers, in a press release.
