European mobile operators bring forward 5G plans

Moves by several mobile operators, especially in Europe, to bring the launch of their 5G networks forward has led analysts to increase their adoption forecasts, with the number of connections expected to reach 340 million by 2021.

That figure will increase to 1 billion by 2023 and 2.7 billion by 2025, at which point 5G will account for one in five mobile connections worldwide, says CCS Insight.

The first 5G networks will launch in the US later this year, initially offering Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband, with operators in Asia expected to follow suit in 2019 and 2020 following the launch of compatible smartphones next year.
