The notion of big data is not new. Rather, it simply describes a scenario whereby data sets occur at sizes beyond the ability of conventional software tools to capture, curate, manage, and process data within a tolerable elapsed time. According to Gartner, “Big Data represents the information assets characterised by such a high volume, velocity and variety to require specific technology and analytical methods for its transformation into value.”

In 2008 the number of devices connected to the Internet exceeded the world’s population, and with the advent of IoT, this number is set to skyrocket to at least 25 billion by 2020.
