Virtual assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant have become integral to modern life, yet they come with significant security and privacy concerns that are often overlooked by users. This issue has been rigorously investigated by Sanchari Das, an assistant professor of computer science at the Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science, along with her research intern, Borna Kalhor. Their award-winning study, acknowledged at the 2024 International Conference on Information Systems Security and Privacy, dives deep into the vulnerabilities of these widely-used virtual assistant apps.

Deep Dives into Virtual Assistant Vulnerabilities

The study meticulously analyzes eight popular virtual assistant apps available for Android phones, including well-known names like Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Microsoft Cortana. The investigation’s revelations are alarming, pointing to substantial security lapses that could lead to significant cybersecurity threats. Weak encryption methods and the use of non-SSL certificates are particularly concerning, as they make these apps vulnerable to DNS hijacking attacks. Even more troubling is the discovery that these apps employ raw SQL queries, making them susceptible to SQL injection attacks—a perilous vulnerability that has historically led to severe cybersecurity breaches across different sectors.

User Data Collection and Privacy Implications

Beyond technical vulnerabilities, the study unveils disturbing practices regarding user data collection and privacy. Virtual assistant apps often gather extensive user data without the users’ full knowledge. This data collection ranges from device-specific information necessary for functionalities like texting, playing music, or navigation via voice commands, to more intrusive data like user locations and interaction patterns. The research shows that many apps include trackers which, while partly useful for crash reporting and bug fixes, also collect data that could be used to predict user behavior and serve targeted advertisements. Importantly, Das’s research underscores the misuse of profiling data, which can lead to racial and other forms of profiling.

The Debate on Opt-In versus Opt-Out

A critical issue highlighted by the study is the default data collection practices of these virtual assistant apps, which usually lean towards opting users in automatically. This necessitates a manual opt-out process for those wishing to safeguard their data, a model far less user-friendly than systems requiring explicit user consent before any data collection. Das argues that regulatory frameworks such as the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Colorado Privacy Act are essential to enforcing stricter data protection measures.
