Why Are Kenyans Abandoning SMS for OTT Messaging Apps?

In recent years, Kenya has witnessed a noticeable shift in communication preferences, with an increasing number of individuals opting for over-the-top (OTT) messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal rather than traditional SMS. Despite a rise in mobile subscriptions, there has been a notable downturn in international SMS figures, highlighting that outgoing messages have decreased by 38.7% and incoming messages by 12% in a recent quarter. Affordable data bundles and the widespread expansion of 4G and 5G networks make OTT apps an appealing choice, especially for international communications. These platforms offer practical features such as end-to-end encryption and allow users to seamlessly share photos and videos, which traditional SMS simply cannot match.

Challenges for Telecom Operators

Telecommunications operators are confronted with considerable challenges due to this shift in messaging trends. Particularly, those whose revenue significantly depended on the SMS tariffs, notably international texts, must rethink their financial strategies. As consumers increasingly lean towards OTT apps, telecom providers have been compelled to reassess their approach, placing a stronger emphasis on data-driven services as a potential span for generating income. Innovations such as digital content and mobile money services promise new revenue streams that can help telecoms adapt to the evolving landscape. In addition, some policymakers have proposed taxing OTT platforms, citing the costs of sustaining telecom infrastructure. Nevertheless, such proposals face resistance from critics who argue that imposing taxes on these platforms could impede innovation and adversely affect user experiences.

Cultural and Generational Shifts

The preference for OTT messaging apps in Kenya not only demonstrates a technological shift but also a cultural and generational transition. Younger Kenyans tend to favor the dynamic, engaging nature of OTT apps, which are packed with emoticons and multimedia capabilities, over the limited scope of SMS.
